In the car on the way to the chocolate teapot factory:

  • Syd Barrett – Barrett
  • Kate Bush – The Hounds of Love

While at work I had some serious digging to do (running low of raw materials with which to manufacture chocolate teapots) and so got through a reasonable amount of stuff:

  • Morton Feldman – For Philip Guston – abandoned, not in the mood for it
  • Corelli – Concerti Grossi, op. 6 – quite dull, actually
  • Beat Furrer – Face de la Chaleur – much, much more interesting!
  • Michael Finnissy – Lost Lands (performed by Topologies) – as I mentioned on Twitter earlier, Finnissy does my head in, but in a good way. The oboe + percs. stuff on this disc always reminds me of Marshall Allen’s oboe playing in the Sun Ra Arkestra. Gave up on this four tracks in… small doses are best
  • Chopin, Études (Nikolai Lugansky) – I have about half a dozen recordings of the whole set, and this is my favourite. Seriously poetic.

On the return journey from the CTF:

  • Coldcut – What’s That Noise – why did dance music get so po-faced? This marvellously witty album continues to make me grin from ear to ear, even 20 years on. And Lisa Stansfield was the greatest guest vocalist that The Fall never had.

Back at home:

  • The Fall – The Frenz Experiment, starting with “Bremen Nacht Alternative”. All 9’55″ of it. Twice. “Child’s forefinger bruises on my wrist/That I had been one day possessed”.
  • Ultra Vivid Scene – Mercy Seat 12″
  • The Fall – Ed’s Babe 12″ – “DIY!”
  • Primal Scream – Crystal Crescent 12″
  • Sonic Youth – Youth Against Fascism 10″ (white vinyl)
  • Adam and the Ants – Prince Charming 7″
  • The Strokes – Last Nite 7″
  • The Golden Dawn – George Hamilton’s Dead 7″ EP on Sarah Records – an absolute indie-pop classic, by the only band (allegedly) ever dropped by Sarah for incompetence
  • Elastica – The Bitch Don’t Work 7″ – if only they hadn’t fallen to bits when they did – they were just getting good…

The evening is going to conclude with Shostakovich’s 13th symphony. I haven’t decided which version yet.
